Intercultural Week at Monastery NS

Monastery NS took part in the 8th Intercultural and Antiracism Week from Monday April 22nd to Friday April 26th. The partner organisation is Show Racism the Red Card and boys from 3rd and 4th class attended a workshop featuring Jeff the Ref.

The week is co-ordinated by 5th class and class teacher Ms Maxwell with the assitance of Master Keane Activities included;

  • a picture colouring competition for infants
  • a Show Racism the Red Card Poster Competition for all classes
  • a Shoot the Hoop Basketball Competition with the countries of the world competing

The highlight event of the week was a multicultural exhibition in their Gym with pupils manning different stands for different countries. Each stand had samples of information about the country, samples of its food and music, national flag etc. Every class in the school visited the exhibition and it provided the boys with an understanding of the cultural diversity in Ireland today.

The flags of many countries were displayed high above the Gym floor. The parents of our newcomer children provided an amazing variety of food including Hungarian Goulash, Latvian dumplings, Nigerian rice dishes, Russian crisps, Malaysian savories, Moldovan desert cake etc. All of the classes thoroughly enjoyed sampling the many different foods from around the world. Parents were invited to attend and local press photographers also attended.

Monastery National School would like to acknowledge the support and funding of Louth Leader Partnership which is an independent company established and supported by the Irish Government and the European Union.
