6th CC - Challenge 3
We are now onto the third challenge of the Sixth Class Challenge. This is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths challenge (S.T.E.M.) and will run from now until the end of April.
The challenge for the boys is to build and launch a ‘water bottle rocket’, made from recyclable materials. To do this, the boys will have to research how to build the rocket, draw designs and gather materials, before then putting all of the pieces together to make the rocket. We encourage the boys to be as creative as they can be with their rocket design in relation to size, name, colour, materials used etc. They could even attach a parachute to their rocket to ensure it lands safely!
Each child will be making their own rocket at home. Teacher will be showing videos, discussing materials and designs with the boys as well as answering any questions along the way to help them to complete the challenge.
There are many videos on Youtube about this topic so there is no shortage of information out there. One simple tutorial can be found on the ‘Sci Guys’ channel - ‘The Sci Guys: Science at Home - S1 - EP18: Water Bottle Rockets’
In order to complete this challenge, the rocket must fly into the air when launched, at our ‘launch day’ in the school field. We will have spectators from the senior classes so it is important that the boys take care in the building of their rocket.
On top of this, the class will also be taking part in ‘National Spring Clean Day’. The boys will be split into teams, each team taking a different part of the school grounds to clean!
