Active Schools 2015-2016
What is an Active School?
The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
Schools wishing to achieve the ASF begin the process by self-evaluating their current provision across 3 areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity and Partnerships. Schools must also organise an Active School Week programme and commit to having it as part of their annual school calendar. Schools that can say ‘yes’ to all of the ASF success criteria will be awarded with the active flag. The flag remains valid for a period of 3 years after which time schools will be invited to re-apply.
ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland.

Active Week 2016
We had an extremely active and fun week last week at Monastery N.S. All pupils participated in a dance off, obstacle course, maths trail, skipathon, Olympic handball game and basketball and soccer skills challenges over the week. Also, there were many activities organised for pupils to be active at lunch breaks such as hula hoops, skipping ropes and a range of soccer and basketball challenges.
The week culminated with the much-anticipated finals of our lunchtime leagues in soccer and basketball as well as a hotly-contested teachers v 6 th class pupils basketball match. Finally, we completed a whole-school challenge to run the distance from Ardee to Paris around the school field to correspond with the kick of Euro 2016. We are definitely super fit after a great weeks activities!
